Augustus Chasing Dream in Beijing

By Chris Mycoskie

Seimone Augustus has clearly established herself as one of the nation’s top women’s basketball players.

She was an All-American at Baton Rouge’s Capitol High School, a two-time Naismith Trophy winner at LSU, and WNBA rookie of the year with the Minnesota Lynx. Now, Augustus has a chance to add gold medalist to her resume as part of Team USA.

“It’s a very big honor,” Augustus said. “Just to be able to represent your country on a big stage like the Olympics means a lot, because you're basically considered the best in our country and you’re competing against the best in the world.”

Augustus joins other superstars including Sue Bird, Lisa Leslie, Diana Taurasi and fellow former Tiger Sylvia Fowles on the American roster. The Baton Rouge native just wants to have a positive impact and help win an Olympic championship.

"I may not play a whole lot of minutes, but I just want to make most of my time when I am on the court.“ Augustus said. “Even when I’m not on the court, (I want to) just encourage my teammates. As far as team, I think nothing less than the gold is acceptable. That's all we're really focused on."

Augustus put up huge numbers at Capitol High and during her four years across town at LSU, but she understands that the Beijing Games won't be about putting up big stats. Instead, she wants to find a role and stick to it.

"I’m probably not going to be looked at to score like I am here (with the Lynx),” Augustus said. “But defensively, I want to be able to cause havoc on that end of the court. Pick my spots to score. If I have a shot, of course you need to take it, but just be that hustle player, that energy player coming off the bench."

The league Augustus stars in wasn't even born until she was 13 years old. Because of that, Olympic gold was her ultimate dream as a kid. That day she imagined could arrive two weeks from Saturday. The gold medal game is August 23rd.
