LSU catcher Micah Gibbs was named Monday to the Baseball America magazine first-team Freshman All-America squad.
Gibbs, a product of Pflugerville, Texas, batted .322 (56-for-174) this season with 16 doubles, two homers, 35 RBI and 31 runs. He was the Tigers’ leading hitter in SEC regular-season games, batting .345 (29-for-84) with seven doubles, one homer and 21 RBI.
Gibbs performed magnificently behind the plate, committing just one error in 392 chances (.997 fielding percentage) while throwing out 17 runners attempting to steal.
Gibbs is competing this summer for the USA Baseball National Team, a squad comprised of the top non-draft-eligible college players in the United States.
The SEC placed six players on the first-team Freshman All-America squad, the most of any conference. SEC players joining Gibbs on the first team are first baseman Hunter Morris of Auburn, second baseman Josh Adams of Florida, outfielder Kentrail Davis of Tennessee, outfielder Brian Fletcher of Auburn and utility player Brett Eibner of Arkansas.
