Autopsy Still Trying to Determine Exact Injury that Caused Death
November 30, 2012 — Julian Madera was approximately 3 years and 10 months old. The manner of death has been determined homicide, but the Lafayette coroner is in the process of determining what injury caused the death. Landon Broussard, who was in custody of Julian at the time of the incident, is telling Lafayette officials that a heavy door fell on Julian causing him to be unconcious. Officials are looking into this story. There is a door off of the hinges at the residence the incident took place, but officials are saying the child's injuries are not consistent with Broussard's story. Broussard, that has been charged with First Degree Murder of Julian, has a prior Contributing to the Deliquency of a Juvenile which he was charged with in April of this year. Laura Smith, Julian's mother, has been charged with Principle to First Degree Murder. Niether Smith nor Broussard are confessing to anything. The autopsy also revealed multiple wounds that were healing along with fresh wounds, which indicates a prolonged history of abuse. Lafayette Sheriff's Department is continuing the criminal investigation gathering evidence from the scene, and conductiong interviews with family members and people that saw Julian days leading up to his death.
