August 6, 2014 — Today many University of Louisiana students kicked off their college semester with beautification and clean-up projects around Downtown as part of Creativity Everywhere Day.
Students were planting "green walls" to cover unsightly electrical box cages, painting bike racks, painting wall murals, and preparing public art walls for additional painting during 2nd Saturday ArtWalks.
Also students were installing lighting in the parcs to give them a more festive feel. This series of projects is aimed at updating some of the most loved Downtown parks in a very visible way that Downtown Marketing Director, Kate Durio, hopes will allow the students to see the things they achieved when they visit Downtown.
"The students are participating in a program at UL called SOUL Camp. Which was an extra orientation the these students signed up for. Coming from our civic organization, Downtown LAfayette, tells us that these are incoming freshmen and first time freshmen who are very civic minded. They signed up for extra community service hours." said Durio.
"There is 160 total in the program, downtown kind of got the lion's share of that today with 40 students. So we identified four different projects that they could do kind of spruce up Parc Sans Souci and Parc de Lafayette."
Kate Durio says a major goal of Downtown is to keep a connection with the university and it's students. If you are interested in seeing the University of Louisiana student's work, it will be on display during the 2nd Saturday ArtWalk and ArtStomp this Saturday form 6pm-9pm.
