LAFAYETTE, LA — A teen who drowned in a Lafayette pond on May 14 has been identified.
At approximately 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Lafayette Police responded to Moore Park regarding a possible drowning.
Witnesses told officers that two males went into the water and began swimming. As they neared the center of the pond, they both began having difficulty staying afloat.
One of the them was able to get to the bank of the pond; the second male went beneath the water and never resurfaced.
First responders arriving on the scene entered the pond, but were unable to locate the victim. The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit was called out to the scene and recovered the victim’s body approximately 2 hours later.
The victim is identified as Christlyn Willis, 17, of Lafayette. The drowning remains under investigation.
