Gillis' Trial Extends Another Day The Children of Gillis' Last Victim Speak Outside Court
Although Thursday was supposed to be the "Grand Finale" in the State's case against accused killer Sean Vincent Gillis, another twist in the trial forced the jury to be dismissed for the day. The state rested their case after linking Gillis again to the victim through DNA under Johnston's fingernail.
Then the victim's teenage daughter, Savannah, testified that the belt found in Gillis' van actually belonged to her. The defense didn't call a single witness and both sides began preparing for closings. Prosecutors for the state objected to one of the jury instructions involving the difference between First and Second degree murder. The issue at stake: Did Gillis kill Donna Bennett Johnston during an armed robbery or kidnapping...or did he kill her just to kill her? Closing arguments are scheduled for 10 am Friday morning. |
