After a 66-32 blowout over Jackson State Saturday, LSU advances to round two of the NCAA tournament. But to get where they want to be, not even a 34-point victory was completely satisfying, especially with an opponent like Marist University up next.
"We are happy that we won but we know that we gotta clean up some things that we cant carry over into the Marist game," senior Quianna Chaney said. "If we do, I'm pretty sure they are gonna take advantage of it.”
"We need to clean up free throws and turnovers," senior Sylvia Fowles said. "Guards did a great job crashing the boards. They did what they had to do. We increased in one area and lacked in another."
The Red Foxes may be the seventh seed, but definitely a force to be reckoned with.
"They are warriors. They play hard every possession. "If we slack off one possession, that is one opportunity for them to do what they got to do."
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions and undefeated since December 12. Their 76-57 win over DePaul in round one increased their winning streak to 23 in a row.
“That’s very impressive," senior RaShonta LaBlanc said. "But we just need to play LSU basketball and do what we need to do to win.”
That includes finding a way to contain the twin towers Rachele Fitz and Meg Dahlman, two of the most versatile bigs the Tigers have come up against.
"They're not just pretty good players down low," Fowles said. "They pass well outside the post and they also shoot threes."
"Most of their post players can step behind the three point line so that will bring Syl out," LeBlanc said.
Although second-seeded LSU may be favored in Monday night’s match-up, the Tigers know better than to take this challenger lightly.
"Everybody is going to come and give it their best," Fowles said. "Especially a team like Marist that has nothing to lose, they're going to give their best. You gotta go out and play for 40 minutes as well."
And as hungry for a national title as the ladies in the purple and gold are, it is a sure shot they will do just that.
