Rookie police show "K-Ville" planned to shut down production here Thursday, cutting short its planned 13-episode shoot due to a strike by the Writers Guild of America.
That means the Fox drama, which stars Anthony Anderson and Cole Hauser as police officers in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, also will be cutting loose its large local crew.
The strike has affected late-night talk shows, in addition to scripted serials. Famed New Orleans musician Fats Domino was supposed to appear Thursday on the "Late Show with David Letterman," but the show, like other late-night comedy shows, went into re-runs Monday, after the strike began.
Just five "K-Ville" episodes have aired, and three new episodes are set to run over the next three weeks. But the remaining episodes haven't been scheduled. On Thursday, there was filming of a scene on a submerged house set on a bayou for the series' 11th episode.
A spring schedule released by Fox Wednesday did not include "K-Ville," though the show has not officially been canceled, and its main police station-house set will not be immediately disassembled.
But an extended strike — and word out of Hollywood is that a quick settlement between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers is unlikely — probably means that this week's shooting is the show's last.
"If this strike were to settle in 2-3 months, I think we'd come back and finish," said Kelly Manners, the show's supervising producer. "If this strike draws out past January, I think quite possibly it's the death of the show."
The show is produced by 20th Century Fox Television.
