Searching heavy wooded area between Parks and St. Martinville
LAFAYETE (KADN) — A woman and two young kids are missing tonight, and police think they might be lost in the woods. Twenty-five year old Heather Gary was 4 wheeler riding yesterday afternoon with her four year old son, her boyfriend, and his four year old daughter. Apparently, the 4 wheeler got stuck so he went for help, but Heather and the kids are missing. The last person to see them was an oil field worker who noticed Gary walking on a gravel road barefoot with the two kids by her side. When he didn't see them walk back on the dead end road, he called the St. Martin Sheriff's Office. Since them the sheriff's department, a State Police helicopter, people on ATVs and a lot of volunteers have been searching the woods. We're told this is an easy place to get lost.
"The terrain is very rugged. It's very think, it's not like there's a clearing every fifty feet, it's very, very thick. There's also a lot of water areas so it's difficult. It's going to have to be done on foot because you can't get the 4 wheelers back there or they'll get stuck," says Major Ginny Higgins, St. Martin Sheriff's Office.
Heather did have her cell phone with her, but no one's been able to make contact.
