Robber charged with first-degree murder after victim dies of heart attack
BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — A Baton Rouge man died from a heart attack after three suspects allegedly caused him physical harm and robbed him of personal belongings. One suspect is behind bars and charged with First-Degree murder and investigators are currently seeking the additional suspects.
The Baton Rouge Police Department reports that the incident occurred at around 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17 around the 1700 block of North Sherwood Forest Blvd. The victim, Terrance Booker, 53, who did not live in the area, was approached by three males. One suspect allegedly “strong-armed” Booker and forced him to the ground. They then took his personal belongings and fled the scene in a vehicle.
While attempting to flee the driver, Brian Wright, 26, of Baton Rouge, crashed the car. Two suspects got out and fled on foot. Wright, however, was apprehended by BRPD officers. We’re told that no one was injured during the crash.
The victim of the alleged robbery, however, was transported to a local hospital where he died from an apparent heart attack. For that reason Wright was charged with his death.
“That particular action [the robbery] caused him stress, which caused him to have a heart attack,” Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, Baton Rouge Police Department, explained. “You can’t know that he wouldn’t have had a heart attack at some point in time eventually. However, if he wouldn’t have had that stress, then we believe he wouldn’t have had a heart attack and he would not have died at that particular time.”
Wright was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for First-Degree murder. An additional charge of Damage to Property was added after Wright allegedly flooded the entire holding cell area by damaging the toilet.
Investigators are currently seeking the two additional suspects involved with the robbery. If you know anything about this incident call Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-STOP (7867). You can also text your tip to CRIMES (274637). Include CS225 at the beginning of your message.
