Review ordered after body found in San Francisco hospital stairwell

"A thorough, independent review" is required of San Francisco General Hospital's security and systems after the body of a woman reported missing from her room was discovered in one of its exterior stairwells, Mayor Ed Lee told reporters Thursday.

The announcement comes after news this week that an engineering worker found the body of 57-year-old Lynne Spalding, who was reported missing from her hospital room on September 21, in the stairwell.

Authorities have not released details about her death. Spalding was admitted to the hospital on September 19 and her condition was improving when she disappeared two days later, according to the joint statement released by the hospital and sheriff's department.
