Poupart's Bakery offering unique twist to their king cakes

Poupart's Bakery has been a staple in Lafayette since it opened in 1967.

"Mr. Francois still lives upstairs and comes down everyday and he's hands-on in it everyday, so it's a family tradition pretty much," says Paul Hernandez, Production Manager at Poupart's Bakery.

Patrick Poupart's parents came over from France and started Pouparts.  This traditional family-owned business is a place Paul Hernandez has felt at home with since he started sixteen years ago.

"Just the atmosphere, the people.  The employees and the customers, it's like we're one big family.  We have a lot of regulars that come in everyday, it's like we're one big family," says Paul.

One major thing that sets Poupart's Bakery apart from other bakeries in Lafayette that also sell king cakes is that they also make a french-style king cake.

"We have the french king cake which is a traditional french gallette I believe it's called in France.  They do it one time a year, which is a puff pastry with an almond filling with it which is a really good thing that sets us apart, nobody else around here is doing that," he says.

Paul says that even though this year has a short Mardi Gras season, the king cake sells have been phenomenal.  So if you're looking for a baked, not fried, king cake with hand-made cream cheese in every bite Poupart's Bakery has the king cake for you.
