Possible smoking ban in Lafayette

The possibility of a ban on smoking in bars around Lafayette is an issue we are hearing about more and more from advocacy groups and even local entertainers around the area. Many people are joining the cause to ban smoking in public places all together.

Musician Chubby Carrier says, ”people like me and the bar maids or bartenders that’s their workplace and as their breathing in that second hand smoke that’s doing damage to their body every day every night and people are getting sick from it.”

Carrier, along with Tobacco Free Living, has approached the Lafayette City-Parish Council to put something in place that will ban smoking in all public facilities, but nothing has come up yet.

Bars and clubs without designated places for people to sit and smoke outside would have to make adjustments. Even regular smokers are leaning toward the ban and some say it should not be the government’s decision to ban smoking everywhere in Lafayette.

Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux thinks that in this year Lafayette will see something come forward ultimately in an up or down vote from the council.

If Lafayette does end up with a ban on smoking in bars and clubs it will join many states that have already decided to eliminate smoking in public places.
