Orleans Parish Sheriff answers questions about recent inmate escapes

Those in charge of the jail in New Orleans are busy, not just with keeping inmates locked up, but with trying to find an escaped one.

Rubin Martin escaped from the tented temporary housing center at Orleans Parish Prison Thursday morning and is on the run.

Martin, 43, is the 6th inmate to escape Orleans Parish Sheriff's office custody since April.

Sheriff Marlin Gusman's system for monitoring juveniles is also under the microscope.

That's because a 14-year-old with an ankle monitor is said by police to be part of a group that terrorized Uptown Tuesday night in a shooting, carjacking and stick-up spree in which attorney Sandy Kaynor was shot twice in the chest in the carport of his Camp Street home.

Kaynor, 53, is currently in stable but critical condition at University Hospital.

That monitored teen was arrested along with another, but at least one other teen remains at large according to New Orleans Police.

The sheriff says the electronic equipment used to monitor the juvenile failed to work, and that an internal investigation of his equipment and personnel is underway. He also stated "the sheriff`s office is working with the New Orleans police department in the investigation of [Tuesday] night's incident, in an effort to determine the level of involvement of this juvenile in any crime."

That juvenile was originally arrested and charged with marijuana possession and now he faces charges of armed robbery.
