Officials: Lafayette gas station set on fire to cover burglary

A Lafayette gas station was set ablaze earlier this morning by a thief looking to cover his tracks.

At 3:23 a.m., Lafayette firefighters responded to the Murphy Oil Gas Station located at 1227 NW Evangeline Thruway for a commercial fire.

When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was coming from the interior of the store. The fire was quickly extinguished. The interior of the store sustained moderate fire and smoke damage. The store was closed at the time of the incident.

The fire was intentionally set. It was determined that the store was burglarized then set on fire.

Fire investigators are continuing the investigation to determine who is responsible. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lafayette Fire Department at 337-291-5505 or Crime Stoppers at 337-232-8477.
