NEW ROADS, LA — In Point Coupee Parish, several houses are now destroyed after a bizarre series of overnight fires in and around New Roads.
Pointe Coupee Sheriff Bud Torres said the situation is still under investigation, but all signs are pointing to arson.
Mayor Robert Myer said this is unusual, but wants to assure Pointe Coupee residents, they are not in any danger.
"This person will be brought to justice. I'm sure about that," Myer said. "I'll repeat a message that our fire chief gave 'The citizens of New Roads and Pointe Coupee Parish should realize that they're safe.'"
Mayor Robert Myer said protecting the citizens of new roads is a priority. After an unusual series of fires that hit New Roads Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, he's working with other officials to get down to the bottom of this.
"Sometimes you can't prevent what you don't know, but now we know there's a suspected arsonist around, we're doing the best we can to make sure it doesn't happen again," Myer said.
Sheriff Bud Torres said five of the houses were abandoned, but the other two were occupied.
"One, people were not home at the time when the house caught on fire, and we don't know if it's related to the other six instances, and the other one that was occupied was next door to an abandoned house that was set on fire," Torres said. "So we've been very fortunate that no one has been killed and no one has been injured since this has started."
Dedrick Jackson lives down the street from one of the destroyed homes. Jackson said it's a sight he'll always remember.
"I just saw a big ball of fire," Jackson said. "I think it's kind of tragic because nobody's house should get burned down."
"We're doing a city-wide canvas to locate every vacant home in the city to make sure this doesn't happen again," Myer said.
Officials are urging Pointe Coupee residents to lookout for suspicious activity. If you have any information about these fires, you can contact the Sheriff's Office at 225-638-5400 or you can visit their website http://www.pcpso.org/index.html
