Schools have had their doors open for a little more than two weeks, and already there have been 56 students arrested in Lafayette Parish.
N. P. Moss Middle School is for the most part just like any other middle school but over the past few weeks they have had some major disruptions, including 16 arrests. "We are having problems, mostly with the students, with some of the students. Attacking the teachers and their attitude," Gene Edwards, the school’s resource officer said.
And while Edwards and some teachers say most of the students are polite, they also agree that some are out of control. "Some over here are, they are very outrageous," said Edwards. "It is a concern that some of these students don't know where to draw the line," added Karen Abshire, a sixth grade science teacher.
And Moss Middle’s Principal Kim Hypolite says the school will not tolerate disruption in the classroom. "We maintain the safety and security of all of our students," she said.
And that is probably the reason Moss Middle now has two officers instead of one. After breaking up an incident the day before, Abshire is happy to see officer’s in her hall. "When I see 3 officers I feel slightly safer. When there's only one, I don't know what he can do with 500 kids," Abshire said.
And as Edwards does what he can, he realizes there is only so much that administration can do. "Some of your teachers, they're trying very hard to do the best they can. Most of your problems start at home. When you can't discipline your child at home, it's bad," he said.
Although some teachers haven’t noticed a rise in violence, others continue to be on guard. Other arrests over the past few weeks were at Lafayette Middle, Lafayette High, Comeaux High, and Northside High.
