Cajuns Open Road Stretch at Tech

By Louisiana Tech Sports Information Dept.

The former Sun Belt, American South and Gulf States Conference rivals will go at it for the 139th time on Tuesday night as the Ragin' Cajuns visit J.C. Love Field for a 6 p.m. contest with Louisiana Tech.

The Bulldogs (9-5) enter the contest fresh off a series victory over Central Arkansas over the weekend, sweeping a Sunday doubleheader after suffering its first shutout of the season in a 5-0 loss on Saturday. Senior centerfielder Adam Cobb continued his hot streak with a 6-for-10 performance against the Bears, most of those hits coming as a leadoff hitter.

UL Lafayette (4-9), a consensus pick to win the Sun Belt title, has struggled to open the 2008 season as evidenced by their three-game sweep at home at the hands of Arkansas State this past weekend. It was the first time the Ragin' Cajuns had been swept in a conference series at M.L. Tigue Field since the 2000 season.

The Cajuns lead the all-time series, 76-62, but Tech holds a 23-22 advantage in known contests in Ruston. Last season, UL Lafayette swept the home-and-home series, winning 5-1 in Lafayette on Feb. 27 then taking the rematch exactly one month later in Ruston, 11-6.

Tech's last victories over UL Lafayette came during the 2006 season, when the Bulldogs won both meetings by scores of 9-3 and 6-3.

Louisiana Tech will send freshman lefthander Mike LeBreton (1-0, 2.79) to the mound for his second career start. LeBreton, a freshman from New Orleans, has appeared in four games this year, pitching 9.2 innings and allowing three runs on 10 hits while striking out one. He got his first career win with five innings of one-run, three-hit ball against Texas-Arlington on Feb. 26.

The Cajuns will counter with another freshman, righty Michael Cook (1-0, 0.00). Cook has appeared in three games for UL Lafayette, allowing two runs (both unearned) on seven hits while striking out seven.
