Students at Carencro Middle School headed home early Tuesday. The school was evacuated after a small fire was reported in the boy’s bathroom.
Fire Marshal’s remained in front of Carencro Middle School Tuesday afternoon as they continued their investigation of the early morning fire. School officials notified the fire department after a large amount of black smoke was reported coming from the second floor men’s bathroom. "It appeared that someone ignited several rolls of toilet paper. The flames were extinguished when we got there, just a large amount of black smoke," said Carencro Assistant Police Chief Dondi Hardin.
Because of all the smoke, emergency officials advised that students should not remain in the building. An emergency call system was used to load students on busses quickly. Luckily, no one was injured and there was no significant structural damage. As of now, officials are ruling the fire arson and will continue their investigation. "In the next few days, the way a lot of these cases are solved is through staff members of the school hearing kids talk about it and then we get called over there for follow up investigations," Hardin explained. If the student who is responsible for the fire is caught they will face possible suspension or expulsion from the school, as well as other charges. Lafayette Parish School Board officials say classes will resume Wednesday for Carencro Middle students.
