A disturbance in a Duson neighborhood this weekend resulted in the arrests of 17 people, and the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office believes that many of those arrested may be illegal immigrants.
Shots rang through the streets Saturday afternoon in the 400 block of Marigny Circle in Duson. After receiving 911 calls from concerned neighbors, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to the neighborhood. "There were large groups of people gathering in a party like atmosphere," explained Lt. Craig Stansbury, Spokesman for the LPSO.
After they arrested the person responsible for shooting the gun, deputies were called back to the area and arrested fifteen more men for possession of cocaine and one for disturbing the peace. In total, 17 men were arrested.
And for neighbors in that area, crime is nothing new. "There's a lot of gunshots that we hear on a regular basis out here so, so it's not something that really shocked me," said neighbor Gino Goines.
Goines says he did not now the individuals arrested but he wasn’t surprised by the news. "We see a lot of people come and go back here, we see a lot of different faces," he said. And those faces arrested Saturday have been turned into the Immigration and Naturalization Service. "These individuals did not have any type of form of identification or proof of residency and a lot of them did admit to us that they were here illegally," Stansbury said. The Lafayette Sheriff’s Office will handle their state cases but their immigration cases will be handled by INS.
