UPDATE: Lafayette Police Investigate Officer Involved Shooting

UPDATE 3-27-14: Lafayette Police have identified the suspect as David Sonnier, 39, of Lafayette.

Sonnier was released from the hospital and charged with one count of Attempted First Degree Murder and one count of Attempted Second Degree Murder.

Sonnier has been booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. The investigation remains ongoing. 


ORIGINAL 3-27-14: On March 27, 2014, at approximately 1:20 pm, Lafayette Police responded to the 1100 block of West Gilman Street regarding a shooting involving a U.S. Postal truck.

When officers arrived on the scene, a Postal employee advised them that a suspect fired a pistol at his vehicle, striking it. Officers located and confronted the armed suspect in the driveway of 1119 West Gilman Street.

As a result of the confrontation, a Lafayette Police officer fired at the suspect multiple times, striking the suspect.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported by Acadian Ambulance to a local hospital.

The Postal employee was not injured during the incident. The suspect is listed in stable condition.

The Lafayette Police Department’s Officer Involved Shooting Team is investigating the encounter between the suspect and the officer. The FBI is investigating the shooting involving the Federal employee. The investigation remains ongoing.
