More bus drivers on long-term leave causing shortage
LAFAYETTE, LA (KADN) — The school system has become critically short of school bus drivers. More of the 290 school bus drivers are out on long-term leaves because of medical problems, personal issues, and other reasons. There are only thirty substitutes which are now being used regularly, leaving the system short of drivers.
"I mean you're going to have health issues any time you deal with that large of a number of people. The deal is, you know, that if I don't have bus drivers the buses don't run, and the kids can't get to school and we can't educate them," says William Samec, Lafayette parish school system's director of transportation.
Samec is ultimately worried about not having enough drivers at the beginning of the next school year. He, along with other administrators, are urging the public if interested to come by the Human Resources office and apply for a position to help the school system solve this problem.
