It's been one of the nation's hot topics this week that Lafayette, Louisiana was named the happiest city in America according to a study by economists at Harvard University and the University of British Colombia.  Mayor Joey Durel says our city could not have paid for better publicity, with people from all over the world looking at the study, and he credits it all to one thing.

"There's no doubt that it's the people.  I mean bottom line it's the attitude we have, we're proud.  I think we're very proud of the fact that we get these accolades, we're very proud of the fact that our food is recognized as some of the best in the world, we're proud of our heritage, and we're proud of our open minded-ness," says City-Parish President Joey Durel, Lafayette Consolidated Government.

Mayor Durel says it's not a melting pot in Lafayette, but more of a gumbo.  He says it's all different kinds of people coming together to make our culture, just like in a gumbo where you can taste all of the different ingredients, like chicken and sausage, and it comes out making an amazing meal.
