A 5-year-old died and a 19-year-old woman is in critical condition following a Sunday afternoon crash.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident happened shortly before 5:00 p.m. on Robley Drive. It involved a truck being driven by a 53-year-old woman from Arkansas, and a crossover being driven by a 19-year-old woman.

Officials say the 19-year-old was driving north on Robley Drive when she lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons. She hit the truck, which was headed south.

The 19-year-old had two children as passengers in her car. The 5-year-old was the front seat passenger, and a 1-year-old was in the back locked in a child safety seat. Although the child in the front seat was wearing a seatbelt, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 19-year-old and the 1-year-old were both treated at a local hospital. The woman is in critical condition, and the child is currently listed as being in stable condition.

The driver of the truck was also treated for minor injuries.

A routine toxicology test is being conducted on both drivers.

Officials say the investigation is ongoing at this time.
