HENDERSON, LA — The Louisiana State Police confirm that one lane of I-10 West could remain closed through the evening, and may not be fully re-opened until sometime tomorrow.
The incident that caused the closure happened on Thursday, Oct. 18 at roughly 8:00 p.m. An 18-wheeler traveling in the West bound lane of I-10 crossed the median and hit another 18-wheeler that was carrying drilling mud, which is a product that becomes as slick as ice after water is added and it solidifies.
After the collision, one truck ignited and fire crews hosed the area with water. The drilling mud that was dumped on the roadway then created a dangerous hazard for drivers, thereby forcing the road closure.
Crews are working to remove the compound to make the road safe again. However, it is a time consuming process.
The crash claimed the life of one person. The name of the victim has not been released.
Officials ask motorists to use I-110 N to US 190 West as an alternative route.
