Huge type O blood shortage in Acadiana
United Blood Services needs your donation to help supply patients at local hospitals
LAFAYETE (KADN) — There is an urgent need for type O blood donors in the Acadiana area, joining the nation in a growing number of blood centers that are encouraging blood donors to step up and help out during the final weeks of August. With Labor Day weekend coming up, United Blood Services is asking the community to please come in to help the supply of type O blood.
"The bottom line is if donors aren't coming in to donate we don't have blood products available for patients at hospitals. At a point in time there could be where there's not blood available for transfusions and we don't want to get to that point, so we're proactively asking donors to come in to prevent that from happening," says Jason Connor, United Blood Services.
Only six percent of the population has O-negative blood, yet patients of all blood types can safely receive it. O-positive is the most common blood type, so it is needed in greater quantities. The United Blood Services donor center on Bertrand Drive in Lafayette is open seven days a week. Donors may call 1-877-UBS-HERO or visit www.UnitedBloodServices.org to make a convenient appointment to donate. Walk-Ins are also accepted.
