Just in time for hurricane season, there's a new way to get the latest information from state police on watches, warnings, and alerts.

It's called ALERT FM. The system sends any alerts or emergency notifications straight to your cell phone.

There's also an FM reciever you can use that sends the messages. The alerts come from the state police or GOHSEP.

It's been in the works for a while and has already been used after storms. Colonel Mike Edmonson with the state police says it's what you need after events like the Boston bombings, the Oklahoma tornadoes, or even Hurricane Katrina.

“It’s about communicating,” stated Edmonson. “It’s an incredibly empty feeling when you cannot pick up an apparatus and talk to somebody.”

The app is available in iTunes or Google Play.
