LAFAYETTE PARISH, LA (NBC33) — On Saturday afternoon, Dec. 28, the Louisiana State Police responded to a two vehicle crash on LA Highway 343, which left three people dead and a Duson man facing charges of vehicular homicide.
According to investigators, the crash occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. As Charles Moter, 58, of Duson, attempted to pass a northbound vehicle, he came hazardously close to hitting a southbound vehicle driven by Nathaniel Malone, 31, of Duson.
In an attempt to avoid a crash, Malone steered left. The front of Moter’s vehicle struck the right side of Malone’s vehicle.
Malone suffered moderate injuries and was transported to an area hospital.
The three passengers in Malone’s vehicle were Joe Wise, 33, of Scott; Cassie Kilby, 14, of Duson; and Kaylin Flyte, 16, of Crowley. Flyte was also pregnant at the time of the crash. All three of these passengers were pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafayette Parish Coroner.
Moter and his passenger, Harrison Moore, 23, of Lafayette, suffered minor injuries and were transported to local hospitals.
Moter was found to be impaired by alcohol and was placed under arrest. A toxicology sample was submitted to the LA State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
After Moter was released from the hospital, he was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center for three counts of vehicular homicide, third degree feticide, negligent injuring, driving left of center, and reckless operation.
This crash remains under investigation.
