Coast Guardsman to face court martial for sexual assualt
NEW ORLEANS, LA (KADN) — A Coast Guardsman accused of sexual misconduct is set to go before a court-martial in April of 2014.
According to the Coast Guard, Petty Officer 3rd Class Joe D. Newmans allegedly raped and assaulted a woman at a private residence in New Orleans, on November 29, 2012.
Coast Guard officials were compelled to try Newmans on charges of rape, sexual assault, and assault, after a nine month investigation and an Article 32 hearing. The Coast Guard explains an Article 32 hearing is the military equivalent of a grand jury hearing in the civilian court system.
Newmans has been reassigned twice since the Coast Guard’s investigation began. The Coast Guard expects the court-martial to begin in early April, and will be held at the Hale Boggs Federal Building in New Orleans.
We will report new information as it becomes available.
