Carencro man arrested after making bomb threat

Last night, Agents with Louisiana State Police Gaming division arrested a Carencro man for making a bomb threat at the Evangeline Downs Casino in Opelousas.

On April 16 at about 9:30 p.m., Agents were notified by employees of the Evangeline Downs Casino about a patron, 43-year-old Russell J. Cormier, who informed casino employees about an explosive device he allegedly left inside the casino.

State Police, Opelousas Police, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office Explosive Detection K-9 and the Opelousas Fire Department responded to the casino. As a safety precaution, the casino was evacuated and a systematic search was conducted. There were no explosive devices located on the grounds.

Cormier was placed under arrest for communication of a bomb threat. He was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail. A person convicted of this crime, which is a felony, can be sentenced up to 20 years in prison.

This case remains under investigation.
