An active World War II-era grenade was found today by construction workers while they were working on a residential project.

“Our bomb squad built a device that allowed us to safely detonate the grenade using a small amount of explosives,” Casey Rayborn Hicks, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office, said. “No one was injured.”

The grenade was discovered on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at a home located in the 13000 block of Highland Road. Officials had to close traffic in both directions for roughly 20 minutes while they worked to safely detonate the grenade.

Officials say the investigation is ongoing at this time.
