July 30, 2014 — The Iberia Sheriff's department reported that yesterday evening, at approximately 6:00 PM, deputies with the Patrol Division responded to the 1200 block of E. Admiral Doyle Dr. in New Iberia, to the business of Wal-Mart concerning reports of a child left unattended in a vehicle.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered that the child left in the vehicle was only seven months old. Lieutenant Richard Fleming of the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office said by the time deputies arrived, the infant was already in the car for approximately 12 minutes.
"When our deputies arrived they found a seven month old infant in the vehicle. The vehicle was locked with the windows rolled up. Temperatures at the time were about 90 degrees." said Fleming.
"Deputies broke into the vehicle by breaking one of the windows in order to get the child out of the vehicle and the heat within the vehicle. The female guardian was subsequently charged with cruelty to a juvenile."
The owner of the vehicle and caretaker of the infant, Crystal Derouen, 42 of New Iberia, arrived at the vehicle shortly after deputies retrieved the infant.
The caretaker was then taken into custody along with the infant and then transported to the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office, Patrol Division for questioning. The infant was later returned to the custody of its mother.
