Forty-four workers were evacuated from a natural gas rig in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday after a blowout on the platform, according to U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Scott Talbot.

Crew members aboard the Hercules 265 were preparing the well for production when they hit an unexpected pocket of gas.

No injuries were reported after the incident.

The rig, located about 60 miles southwest of Grand Isle, Louisiana, is leased by Walter Oil & Gas Corporation.

Talbot said there was no sheen visible on the water's surface, just bubbling gas. He did not give an estimate as to when the gas would be shut off.
