Jindal will not cut education funding

NEW ORLEANS - Governor Bobby Jindal says there will be no more cuts to higher education.

The state faces a $1 billion short fall.

The proposed $24.2 billion budget focuses on protecting economic growth, certain parts of healthcare and education.

Jindal plans to give colleges and universities time to increase their graduation rates.

Right now, Louisiana has the second worst graduation rate in the country.

Jindal also proposed no eliminations to medicaid services.

He says the proposal will hopefully soften the blow for tougher fiscal years to come.

Budget talks will continue throughout the three month legislative session that starts march 29th.

Lawmakers will begin reviewing the proposal next week.
