Congressman speaks on oyster ban

UNDATED - Congressman Charlie Melancon was one of the officials at the forefront in getting the FDA to take another look at the oyster ban.

The congressman was in the D.C. area this week.

Here's some of what Melancon had to say since originally discussing the problem.

"Banning fresh Gulf oysters in the name of food safety is like killing a fly with a sledgehammer. Now it appears the FDA is coming to realize the harm this ban on Louisiana, and is reaching for a fly swatter instead."

The FDA has announced it's dropping plans to implement a ban on the sale of raw oysters from the Gulf Coast.
