Elementary students learn early to eat healthy by learning to grow produce

Thursday, September 20, 2012 - 11:15am

Dozens of students at Cedarcrest Elementary School in Baton Rouge got a first-hand look at what it's like to live a healthy lifestyle.

The American Heart Association’s Teaching Garden was at the school. The goal is to have the kids plant seeds, nurture plants, and eat healthy. The heart association says studies have shown if students see how inexpensive eating healthy is compared to buying it in the store- they're more likely to make the right choices.

“We want them to be able to eat healthy, live a healthy lifestyle,” explained Naomi Doll, teacher at Cedarcrest Elementary. “It's very expensive to buy fresh produce. So, be able to grow it teaches them a whole new aspect of it."

A recent study showed more than 60 percent of Louisiana will be obese by the year 2030.
