Officials say a fire killed a Lafayette man over Labor Day weekend.

Wally Romero, a long time resident of the city, died at his house off Smith near the University of Louisiana-Lafayette campus. Firefighters arrived at the home around 3 a.m. Saturday morning to heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.

Firefighters found Romero lying on the floor near the bathroom.
